Lhasa Apso Care
- Maintenance: needs frequent brushing and regular baths to keep the coat clean, loose and tangle-free. Typically, brush it several times a week—and even daily if it wears a long coat—and bathe it every 2 to 4 weeks depending on coat length and lifestyle.
- Brushing and combing: it’s recommended to work in layers with a pin brush or a soft slicker, finishing with a metal comb to check there are no tangles left in the armpits, skirt, beard, legs and behind the ears. It’s best to use gentle moisturizing shampoos for long coats and conditioners or detangling sprays that make brushing easier without weighing the coat down.
- Haircut: it can be kept in a long show coat or with a more practical pet trim. In commercial grooming, a functional tidy-up is usually done with scissors or clippers to shorten the body, chest, belly and legs, keeping a rounded, clean look on the head, ears, feet and sanitary area.
- Special attention: you should keep a close eye on the eyes, beard, tear stains, ears, armpits, groin and paw pads, because these areas collect moisture, dirt and tangles. It’s also advisable to monitor the condition of the skin under the coat and prevent the hair from becoming matted after baths or walks.
- Recommended grooming appointments: bath every 2 to 4 weeks and grooming every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on whether it wears a long coat or a maintenance trim. For dogs with a full long coat, visits and at-home care need to be more consistent.
Want the best care for your Lhasa Apso?
We’ll show you the 3 steps you should follow to achieve it.
1. BRUSHING AND COMBING
- Brushing a Lhasa Apso should be done in sections, from roots to tips, to prevent hidden tangles under the top coat.
- It’s not enough to run the brush over the surface: it’s important to part the coat and work thoroughly, especially in the armpits, behind the ears, chest, skirt, legs and tail.
- The metal comb serves as a final check to ensure the coat is loose and fully detangled.

2. BATH
- Bathing should be regular to keep the coat clean and manageable.
- In this breed, a dirty coat tangles more easily, so it’s best to wash with a mild shampoo for long hair and follow with a conditioner or light mask to help with detangling.
- After bathing, it’s essential to dry completely while brushing to prevent matting and knots from the roots.

3. HYGIENE
- Lhasa Apso hygiene should include frequent cleaning of the eyes and tear stains, ear checks, nail trimming, and care of the hair between the paw pads and the perianal area.
- The beard also needs regular attention, because it easily retains moisture and debris.
-
Keeping these areas clean helps prevent irritation, bad odors and localized tangles.

What is the Lhasa Apso like?
The Lhasa Apso is a small, compact and well-proportioned dog, with an elegant and very distinctive look thanks to its long, abundant coat parted along the back. Its hair is heavy, straight and harsh to the touch, with a moderate undercoat, and should be neither woolly nor silky. This combination gives it a dense, protective appearance, designed to shield the body without restricting movement.
The head is well framed by the hair, with abundant fall over the eyes and face, and a visible beard and moustache, which enhances its noble, alert expression. Overall, it conveys sturdiness, balance and a distinguished carriage despite its small size. When the coat is well maintained, the silhouette looks long, flowing and natural, with legs and feet well covered in hair.
In terms of upkeep, it is a demanding breed within dog grooming. The long coat tends to tangle easily in the armpits, groin, beard, ears, legs and belly area if it isn’t brushed consistently. It can be worn with the traditional long coat or in a more functional puppy-style trim, but in both cases it needs regular brushing, periodic bathing and careful drying to prevent knots and matting.
