Caring for an Afghan Hound
- Maintenance: it is recommended to brush this coat daily to avoid knotting, but it should be brushed a minimum of 3 times a week with a bath every 15 days.
- Haircut: Stripping is used on the back, tail, face and throat. Some commercial pet groomers will use either clippers or shears to complete these parts instead. There should be considerable length on the legs, head, back of tail and skirt.
- Special Attention: It is important to keep ontop of the hygiene of the eyes and ears to avoid infections. This coat can have the tendency to knot when kept longer so always check the coat through with a comb after brushing to catch any knots that may remain.
- Professional Grooming: This coat, especially if kept longer, should be professionally groomed every 8 weeks with a bath in between for maintenance. Regular grooming visits ensure the coat is kept in it's ideal state.

2. BATHING
- Bathing the Afghan is essential to keep its skin and coat clean and free of bad odors.
- It is recommended to do it once a month, although in long-haired dogs the frequency may be higher.
- Finishing with a conditioner is ideal to prevent dehydration, color loss, and knot formation.
- When it is not possible to use a bathtub, dry shampoo is an effective alternative.

3. HYGIENE
- Keeping the Afghan's ears clean is essential to prevent discomforts such as irritations and itching.
- Tartar problems, one of the main reasons for veterinary consultation, can be controlled with frequent dental brushing.
- Light-coated dogs exposed to the sun should be protected with sun products to prevent dryness and color loss.
- The nose and pads, as they have no hair, require special hydration to prevent injuries.
Ear Cleaner
We use Artero Aurigel to clean the ear canals for the Afghans, it is easy to apply and will remove all unwanted wax and dirt from the ear without damaging the delicate structure of the canal.
