Care for the Swiss White Shepherd

  • Maintenance: needs regular brushing, usually two or three times a week, increasing frequency during shedding season to remove undercoat and dead hair. Bathing is usually done every 6 to 8 weeks, or sooner if they get truly dirty, aiming to keep the white coat clean without drying out the skin or altering the coat’s texture.
  • Brushing and combing: works well with a slicker brush, long-pin brush, metal comb, and undercoat-removal tools when shedding is heavy. Pay special attention to the neck, behind the ears, chest, breeches, tail, and armpits, as these are areas where hair builds up more and can mat. The goal is to open up the coat, reach the undercoat, and keep it ventilated without breaking the outer layer.
  • Hair trimming: this is not a breed that should be shaved or generally clipped. Typical grooming consists of tidying and neatening, lightly trimming feet, outlines, sanitary area, and any occasional excess to maintain a clean, natural look. The silhouette should be preserved as given by the coat itself, without changing its volume or structure.
  • Special attention: it’s advisable to monitor seasonal shedding, keeping the white clean, friction areas, and moisture trapped in the undercoat after bathing. Also thoroughly check behind the ears, armpits, groin, tail, ears, nails, and paw pads to prevent localized mats, built-up dirt, or minor skin discomfort.
  • Recommended grooming appointments: bathing every 6 to 8 weeks and maintenance grooming every 8 to 12 weeks, moving it up during heavy shedding periods or when intensive undercoat removal and outline tidying are needed.

Want the best care for your Swiss White Shepherd?

We’ll show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.

1. BRUSHING AND COMBING

  • The Swiss White Shepherd needs consistent brushing to keep the coat loose, clean, and free of internal undercoat buildup.
  • Although the outer hair usually protects quite well, during shedding it can release a large amount of hair, so it’s best to work in layers and check the densest areas with a comb.
  • The neck, tail, breeches, and behind the ears usually need more attention so the coat keeps its movement and doesn’t compact close to the skin.

2. BATH

  • Bathing should be regular but not excessive. For this breed, it’s important to clean thoroughly and enhance the white without weighing down the coat or leaving residue that reduces lightness.

  • After washing, it’s important to dry completely down to the roots, because the dense undercoat can retain moisture if not worked properly.
  • Proper drying also helps loosen dead hair and leaves the coat more airy.

  • It’s also advisable to closely monitor areas where the coat rubs more or where dirt accumulates easily, especially on the legs, rear, and neck.
  • In a white breed, these routines also help keep a clean, well-groomed look between grooming sessions.

What is the Swiss White Shepherd like?

The Swiss White Shepherd is a medium-to-large dog, elegant, athletic, and very well-balanced, with an abundant, protective white double coat. It can come in medium or long coat varieties, but in both cases the hair is straight, dense, and with a well-developed undercoat, giving it plenty of volume and insulation against the weather.

On the head, ears, and the front of the limbs the hair is shorter, while on the neck, tail, and the back of the legs it gains more length and presence.

From a grooming standpoint, it’s not a breed for decorative cutting or sculpted styling. Its look depends on keeping the natural coat clean, airy, and well worked, always respecting the double coat. It’s a very striking dog for its color and texture, but its upkeep is based more on controlling shedding, removing dead hair, and preventing tangles in specific areas than on doing haircuts.

When cared for regularly, the coat keeps a clean, loose, and tidy appearance without losing its protective function.
