Caring for the Shiba Inu

  • Brushing: Brush once a week to keep the coat healthy and tangle-free.
  • Shedding: In spring and fall, it is essential to remove dead hair more frequently to promote new coat.
  • Bathing: Recommended once a month.
  • Grooming: Monthly appointments for bathing and specific treatments during shedding seasons.
  • Haircut: Should not be cut, as this is a naturally shedding breed. Maintenance is based on brushing, de-shedding, and minor trimming with shears to perfect the shape.

¿Do you want the best care for your Shiba Inu?

Here are 3 easy to follow steps for the best results.

1. BRUSHING

  • Double-coated dogs shed their fur twice a year.
  • It is recommended to brush Shiba Inu dogs weekly with a long-bristled brush to reduce hair loss at home.
  • A spray conditioner makes brushing easier, prevents pulling, and provides shine and hydration.
  • De-shedding brushes and rakes help remove the undercoat without affecting the dog's natural protection.

¿What is the Shiba Inu like?

Character: It is an intelligent, independent, and very self-confident dog. It tends to be reserved with strangers but is loyal and affectionate with its family. It has a strong hunting instinct and a somewhat stubborn character, so it needs firm training from an early age.

Personality: Values its space and is not usually overly affectionate, although it forms a very strong bond with its owners. It loves to explore and is very agile and fast.

Its name, “Shiba,” means “bush” in Japanese, because it was traditionally used for hunting small areas of scrub and forest. In addition, its reddish color is reminiscent of the dry leaves of those bushes in autumn.
