Long-haired Dachshund Care

  • Maintenance: It is recommended to brush it several times a week with a metal pin brush and a comb, paying special attention to the ears, chest, tail, and armpits, where knots tend to form. Bathing can be done every 3–4 weeks with hydrating shampoos that respect the hair's texture.
  • Brushing and combing: Brush 2 to 3 times a week to prevent tangles and remove shedding hair. The use of conditioning sprays facilitates brushing, prevents breakage, and adds shine to the coat.
  • Haircut: It is not recommended to radically cut the hair. It is enough to keep the coat detangled, lightly trim the feet, tail, and ear contours with scissors to maintain a clean and tidy silhouette.
  • Special attention: Check ears and armpits, areas where hair tangles easily. For tear stains and folds, the use of Pretty Eyes is advised, and for refreshing the coat between baths, Plis Plas Plus.
  • Recommended grooming appointments: A visit every 4–6 weeks for bathing, thorough brushing, detangling, and general coat touch-up is ideal.

Do you want the best care for your Dachshund?

Here are 3 easy steps for you to follow for the best results:

1. BRUSHING

  • Long-haired Dachshunds require constant care, as their silky coat with abundant undercoat is prone to tangles and the accumulation of shedding hair.
  • Regular brushing with a metal comb and pin brush several times a week helps to keep the hair airy, knot-free, and ensures good skin ventilation.
  • In the most delicate areas, such as the ears, armpits, or abdomen, it is recommended to use a soft bristle brush to avoid pulling.
  • The use of a conditioning spray facilitates detangling, provides hydration, and enhances the natural shine of the coat.
  • During shedding seasons, it is advisable to remove the excess undercoat with appropriate tools. On the back, the excess undercoat can be carefully extracted to favor coat renewal and define the typical silhouette of the Long-haired Dachshund.

What is the Dachsund like?

The Long-haired Dachshund is a variety of this German breed that was developed in the Middle Ages as a hunting dog. Its silky and longer coat clearly differentiates it from the other varieties, giving it an elegant and distinguished appearance.

Like all Dachshunds, it is a brave, curious dog with a very marked hunting instinct. It has a small, elongated, and compact body, with long ears and a sweet and attentive expression.

Despite its size, it is a very active and energetic dog that needs regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay balanced. It is affectionate, loyal, and close to its family, adapting well to both apartments and houses with a garden, as long as it has enough activity.

It can be somewhat stubborn and independent, so it requires consistent and patient training. The Long-haired Dachshund is ideal for affectionate families who enjoy an active, elegant dog with a great personality.
