Lagotto Romagnolo Care
- Maintenance: needs frequent coat checks to prevent knots and matting, with controlled brushing and regular trimming to keep a practical length. Bathing is usually done every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on lifestyle, coat length, and how easily the coat picks up dirt or moisture.
- Brushing and combing: use a soft slicker brush, metal comb, and tools that allow you to gently open the curl without over-breaking it. Check armpits, groin, beard, behind the ears, legs, and collar area thoroughly, as these are spots where the coat compacts more easily. The goal is to keep the coat clean, airy, and controlled, respecting its natural curly texture.
- Haircut: the usual trim is done with scissors or clippers, keeping an even, functional length throughout the body. The head, beard, legs, feet, outlines, and hygiene areas are worked so the dog keeps its natural silhouette and the curl remains manageable. The aim is not an ornamental or overly sculpted finish, but a practical, balanced one.
- Special attention: keep a close eye on ears, beard, armpits, groin, feet, and the perianal area, as moisture and knots tend to concentrate in those areas. It’s also advisable to dry very thoroughly after bathing to prevent the coat from holding moisture close to the skin and forming internal mats that are hard to detect at first.
- Recommended grooming appointments: bathing every 4 to 8 weeks and maintenance grooming every 6 to 8 weeks, adjusting frequency to coat length, the dog’s activity, and how easily mats form.
Want the best care for your Lagotto Romagnolo?
We’ll show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.
1. BRUSHING AND COMBING
- The Lagotto Romagnolo needs careful, methodical, consistent brushing.
- It’s not advisable to let too much time pass between checks because the dense curl tends to join together close to the skin, especially in friction areas.
- Ideally, work in layers, checking with a comb to ensure there are no hidden knots in the armpits, groin, beard, behind the ears, and legs.
- The aim is not a straight or fluffy look, but a clean, controlled curl with a natural appearance.

2. BATHING
- Bathing should be done with gentle products suitable for curly or woolly coats, which cleanse without drying out or leaving heavy residue.
- In this breed, poor drying makes later maintenance much harder, because retained moisture encourages knots and matting.
- That’s why, in addition to bathing, it’s essential to dry the entire coat thoroughly down to the roots, especially in a dog with so much hair and density.

What is the Lagotto Romagnolo like?
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a small-to-medium-sized dog, compact, rustic, and very recognizable for its dense, curly, woolly-textured coat. The hair forms tight, uniform curls all over the body, including the head, where the beard, eyebrows, and mustache are part of its typical expression. It should not give the impression of silky, straight, or shiny hair, but rather an abundant coat, coarse on the surface and highly functional.
It is a natural-looking breed, not a decorative grooming breed, and its coat has a protective function against moisture and outdoor work. In addition to the outer curl, it has a visible undercoat, which makes the overall coat denser and prone to compacting if not maintained properly. When the hair grows too long or isn’t checked frequently, it can mat easily, especially in areas of friction or moisture.
In grooming, the Lagotto needs consistent maintenance to keep the curl healthy, airy, and manageable. The goal is not to straighten, over-open, or sculpt the coat into an artificial finish, but to maintain a practical, uniform length that respects its natural shape. It’s a breed that requires more control than others with short or harsh coats, because the tight curl and coat density mean that any neglect quickly results in knots, matting, and greater difficulty in daily maintenance.
