Irish Setter Care

  • Maintenance: The Irish Setter has a long, silky, feathered coat that requires high maintenance. Brushing at least 3 times a week is recommended to prevent tangles and remove dirt or dead hair. Bathing can be done every 4 to 6 weeks or when the dog is really dirty.
  • Brushing and combing: For grooming, it’s recommended to use a metal pin brush or a slicker brush, along with a metal comb to check the coat. It’s important to work especially on feathered areas such as the ears, chest, legs, and tail, where the hair can tangle easily.
  • Hair Trimming: The Irish Setter doesn’t require full haircuts, but does need tidying to maintain its natural silhouette. Commonly, the hair on the legs is shaped, as well as around the ears, the rear area, and the chest, in addition to trimming the hair between the paw pads to improve hygiene.
  • Special attention: Special attention should be paid to areas where the hair is longer, such as behind the ears, armpits, chest, back of the legs, and tail, as tangles can form. It’s also important to check the long, drooping ears to prevent a buildup of moisture or dirt.
  • Recommended grooming appointments: Bath every 4 to 6 weeks and grooming sessions every 6 to 8 weeks for coat maintenance, feather trimming, de-matting, and overall hygiene checks.

Want the best care for your Irish Setter?

We’ll show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.

1. BRUSHING AND COMBING

  • The Irish Setter has a long, fine, silky coat with feathering on various areas of the body.
  • To keep it in good condition, it needs frequent brushing using a metal pin brush or slicker.
  • Brushing should be done gently and in layers to avoid pulling and to thoroughly work the areas with greater hair density.
  • After brushing, it’s recommended to use a metal comb to check that no tangles remain.

3. HYGIENE

  • Irish Setter hygiene should include regular ear cleaning, as their long, drooping ears can accumulate moisture or dirt.

  • Checking the paw pads and keeping the hair between them trimmed helps prevent dirt buildup.
