Harrier Care
- Grooming: needs weekly brushing and occasional baths, as its short coat requires little work, although it’s advisable to remove loose hair and dirt regularly. Typically, brush it once a week and bathe only when it’s dirty or every 4 to 8 weeks depending on its lifestyle.
- Brushing and combing: it’s recommended to use a rubber grooming mitt, soft-bristle brush, or a hound mitt to remove dead hair and distribute the coat’s natural oils. It’s best to use mild shampoos for short coats and avoid heavy products that can dry out or dull the natural shine.
- Hair Trimming: it doesn’t need a haircut as such, because the coat should be kept natural, short, and close to the body. Only minimal hygiene trims are done for nails, paw pads, the perianal area, or small clean-up touch-ups if needed.
- Special attention: it’s especially important to monitor the ears, since as a drop-eared hound they can accumulate moisture and dirt, as well as checking nails, paw pads, and overall skin condition. It’s also helpful to keep an eye on seasonal shedding and make sure there’s no irritation after long walks or baths.
- Recommended grooming appointments: bathing every 4 to 8 weeks as needed and basic grooming or hygiene maintenance sessions every 6 to 8 weeks to check nails, ears, paw pads, and manage dead hair.
Want the best care for your Harrier?
We’ll show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.
1. BRUSHING AND COMBING
- The Harrier is easy to brush, but benefits from a weekly routine to remove dead hair, dust, and surface dirt.
- Ideally, use a rubber grooming mitt, hound glove, or soft-bristle brush, always brushing in the direction of hair growth to maintain shine and avoid irritating the skin.
- It doesn’t need complex detangling or specific styling, but it does benefit from consistent attention to the tail, neck, and sides during shedding seasons.

2. BATH
- Bathing should be moderate, only when it’s truly dirty or starts to smell, so as not to overly strip the coat’s natural protection.
- It’s recommended to use a mild dog shampoo and rinse very thoroughly, then dry well, especially the ears, groin, and belly area.
- With this breed, the goal is cleanliness, healthy skin, and the natural shine of the short coat.

What is the Harrier like?
The Harrier it’s a medium-sized dog with a strong, well-proportioned, highly functional build, bred to follow scents over long days. It has an athletic body, compact yet elegant, with a well-developed chest, strong back, and solid limbs that allow it to move with endurance and agility. Its overall look conveys energy, balance, and working ability, without seeming heavy or coarse.
The head is moderately broad, with a lively, friendly expression, a defined muzzle, and medium-length drop ears that frame the face well. The eyes typically show an alert, intelligent gaze, very attentive to its surroundings. It’s a breed with a noble, active appearance, typical of hounds, always ready to move.
Its coat is short, smooth, dense, and hard-wearing, lying close to the body, which makes daily upkeep quite easy. It has no feathering or volume, and its finish should look clean, natural, and glossy. Although at first glance it seems like a low-maintenance breed aesthetically, it does need regular care to remove dead hair, keep the skin healthy, and maintain an overall good appearance.
In terms of temperament, it’s usually a sociable, lively, and very energetic dog. It’s naturally active, curious, and has a strong scenting instinct, so it enjoys exercise, long walks, and outdoor activities. Its body language is often cheerful and confident, reinforcing that image of a hardy, working dog that’s always on the go.
