Border Terrier care
- Maintenance: requires weekly brushing and, during shedding seasons or when the coat “opens,” it’s advisable to increase the frequency to remove dead hair and loose undercoat. Bathing should not be excessive so as not to soften or alter the harsh coat; it usually works well every 6 to 10 weeks, or sooner only if it gets truly dirty.
- Brushing and combing: it’s best done with a soft or medium slicker brush, a metal comb, and, when appropriate, a stripping knife or stripping stone to remove mature hair without damaging the texture. The goal is not to create fluffy volume, but to keep the coat harsh, clean and well-ventilated, working thoroughly through the beard, neck, shoulders, light furnishings and legs.
- Hair Trim: the usual grooming is not a short clipper cut, but hand stripping or manual trimming to preserve the harsh outer coat and natural outline. Work is typically focused on the neck, withers, back, sides, croup and tail, keeping the head tidy but natural, and neatening feet and outlines discreetly.
- Special attention: keep an eye on the beard and facial area, armpits, groin, legs and feet, where dirt can build up or the undercoat can mat. It’s also a good idea to monitor ears, nails and skin if bathing is too frequent or if products that soften the coat are used, because that harms its protective texture.
- Recommended grooming appointments: bathing about every 6 to 10 weeks and grooming every 8 to 12 weeks for coat maintenance; if you want to better preserve the breed’s typical texture, you can do rolling coat or more frequent maintenance stripping in short sessions.
Want the best care for your Border Terrier?
We’ll show you the 3 steps you should follow to achieve it.
1. BRUSHING AND COMBING
- The Border Terrier doesn’t need ornamental styling, but it does need regular work to remove dead hair and keep the harsh coat in good condition.
- The most useful approach is to combine weekly brushing with a metal comb and more thorough checks during shedding seasons.
- On typical breed coats, stripping helps preserve the rough texture and the hair’s natural protection; trimming too much or overusing clippers can soften it and change its function.

2. BATH
-
Bathing should be moderate. In this breed it’s usually preferable to space it out and use gentle shampoos that clean without softening the coat or excessively removing its natural oils.
-
When bathing is too frequent, the hair can lose its harshness and the skin can become more easily affected. - Complete drying, without leaving moisture in the undercoat, helps keep the skin healthy and the coat functional.

What is the Border Terrier like?
The Border Terrier is a small, active, hardy and highly functional dog, bred for work in the countryside and adapted to outdoor life. Its overall look is rustic and natural, without excessive volume or artificial finishes, something that is directly reflected in its coat.
It has a harsh, rough, close-fitting outer coat, designed to protect it from dirt, moisture and bad weather, while the undercoat is dense and tight, providing insulation and helping keep the skin protected. This combination means it’s not a long-haired breed nor one for ornamental grooming, but a dog whose coat should retain its practical, protective texture.
In grooming, the Border Terrier is not handled like a decorative-cut breed or one with a rounded finish. The most important thing is to respect its natural structure and maintain coat quality, avoiding techniques or routines that soften it, thin it too much, or alter its function.
Its upkeep is usually considered moderate: it doesn’t require intensive daily care, but it does require consistency to remove dead hair, aerate the undercoat and prevent the coat from matting or losing harshness. When properly cared for, the hair maintains that rough, compact finish so characteristic of the breed, while also offering very effective protection against the environment.
