Care for the Belgian Shepherd Groenendael
- Maintenance: needs regular brushing, usually two or three times a week, and during shedding season it’s a good idea to increase it to remove loose undercoat and prevent buildup of dead hair. Bathing can be done every 6 to 8 weeks approximately, or sooner if it truly needs it, taking care not to overly alter the texture or the coat’s natural protection.
- Brushing and combing: it works well with a slicker brush, long-pin brush and metal comb to check the neck, behind the ears, chest, trousers, tail and armpits. The key is to part the coat well, reach the undercoat and remove dead hair without breaking the outer layer or creating excessive artificial volume.
- Haircut: this is not a breed that should be shaved or generally trimmed. The usual work is to tidy and neaten, lightly refining feet, outlines and hygiene areas, always respecting the natural silhouette and the coat’s typical length, especially on the neck, tail and the backs of the legs.
- Special attention: it’s advisable to watch especially behind the ears, armpits, groin, trousers, tail and collar area, where the coat can tangle or mat more easily. You should also check ears, nails and paw pads, and dry the undercoat very thoroughly after bathing to prevent moisture being trapped near the skin.
- Recommended grooming appointments: bath every 6 to 8 weeks and maintenance grooming every 8 to 12 weeks, bringing it forward in shedding season if it needs intensive undercoat removal and outline touch-ups.
Want the best care for your Belgian Shepherd Groenendael?
We’ll show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.
1. BRUSHING AND COMBING
- The Belgian Shepherd Groenendael needs consistent brushing to keep the long coat clean, airy and free of internal tangles.
- Although the outer coat usually protects quite well, the undercoat can build up and shed heavily during shedding seasons, so it’s best to work in layers and check the densest areas with a comb.
- Behind the ears, neck, chest, trousers and tail usually require more attention so the coat keeps its movement and doesn’t compact near the skin.

What is the Belgian Shepherd Groenendael like?
The Belgian Shepherd Groenendael it is a medium-sized dog, elegant, athletic and very expressive, with a long, abundant, always-black coat, accompanied by a dense undercoat that provides protection against the weather.
The hair is straight, firm and fairly close to the body, not silky or curly, and it shows more length and presence on the neck, chest, back of the legs and tail, where it forms a very characteristic overall look of the variety.
In grooming terms, it is not a breed for decorative cutting or sculpted styling. Its beauty depends mainly on keeping the natural coat well worked, removing dead hair, keeping the double coat in good condition and avoiding matting in the areas with the most friction.
Although its look is very striking, maintenance is not usually complicated if done regularly, but it does require consistency, especially during shedding seasons, when the undercoat sheds more intensely.
