Basenji Care
- Maintenance: The Basenji has very short, fine hair that lies close to the body, so maintenance is low. Usually, brushing once a week is enough to remove dead hair and keep the coat shiny. Bathing can be done every 6 to 8 weeks or when the dog is really dirty.
- Brushing and combing: For grooming, it’s enough to use a rubber grooming glove, a soft-bristle brush, or a massage mitt to help remove loose hair and stimulate the skin. Regular brushing also helps distribute the coat’s natural oils and maintain its natural shine.
- Haircut: The Basenji doesn’t need a haircut. Its coat naturally stays short and clean, so upkeep is limited to brushing and small hygienic touch-ups if needed on paws or specific areas.
- Special attention: It’s important to check the ears to prevent dirt buildup and keep the nails well trimmed. It’s also advisable to monitor the skin, as its short hair leaves potential irritations or bites more exposed. Checking paw pads and maintaining good dental hygiene are part of its regular care.
- Recommended grooming appointments: Bath every 6 to 8 weeks and maintenance sessions every 6 to 8 weeks for general hygiene, nail check, ear cleaning, and monitoring skin condition.
