Leonberger Care

  • Maintenance: The Leonberger has a long, dense coat with an undercoat, so its maintenance needs are high. Brushing 2 to 3 times a week is recommended to prevent matting and remove dead hair. During shedding seasons, it is advisable to increase brushing frequency. Bathing can be done every 6 to 8 weeks or when the dog is truly dirty.
  • Brushing and combing: For grooming, it is recommended to use a long metal-pin brush or a slicker brush to work the deep coat, along with a metal comb to check for possible knots. Brushing should be done in layers to reach the undercoat and avoid buildup of dead hair.
  • Hair trimming: The Leonberger does not require full haircuts. Natural tidy-ups are usually done in areas such as the paws, rear, ears, and tail to keep the coat neat and clean. It is also common to trim the hair between the paw pads to improve hygiene.
  • Special attention: It’s important to pay special attention to areas where the hair is denser, such as behind the ears, the neck, the armpits, the back of the legs, and the tail, as mats can form. It’s also a good idea to check the ears, keep the nails trimmed, and monitor the condition of the skin under the dense coat.
  • Recommended grooming appointments: Bath every 6 to 8 weeks and grooming sessions every 6 to 8 weeks for deshedding, coat maintenance, hygiene trim, and a general check-up.

Want the best care for your Leonberger?

We show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.

1. BRUSHING AND COMBING

  • The Leonberger has a long, dense, slightly wavy coat with a plentiful undercoat.
  • To keep it in good condition, it needs to be brushed several times a week using a slicker brush or a long metal-pin brush.
  • Brushing should be done in layers, lifting the hair to work from the roots to the ends.
  • This helps remove dead undercoat and prevents matting, especially in areas such as the neck, hind legs, and tail.
