Caring for a Spanish Greyhound

  • Maintenance: Brush once a week to remove excess moulted hair and bathe monthly to keep clean.
Grooming: Shorthaired breeds should not be clipped as they renew their coats. You can help by brushing the coat with a rubber mitt or brush to remove the excess hair and reduce shedding at home.
Special Attention: Pay extra attention to the pet's elbows as the skin there is prone to drying and cracking. Also keep an eye on any skin folds which can trap dirt and bacteria that can lead to irritation.
Recommended Grooming Appointments: A monthly bath is sufficient to help out with the shedding of this breed, make sure to use a moisturising shampoo to benefit both hair and skin.

Do you want the best care for your Spanish Greyhound?

Here are 3 easy steps to follow for the best results:

1. BRUSHING

  • The Spanish Greyhound, with short hair, typically sheds twice a year.
  • Regular brushing with a rubber brush prevents excessive hair loss.
  • Rakes with long teeth are ideal for removing hair that is in the process of shedding from the follicle.
  • Undercoat rakes make it easier to partially remove the undercoat.

What is the Spanish Greyhound like?

This is originally a Spanish breed known for it's speed and running ability. They are tall, slender dogs with a light bone structure and long, muscular legs that allow them to run at impressive speeds.

Although they are very active dogs and need a lot of exercise and physical activity, they are also very calm and affectionate to their owners. They love to be close to their owners and very protective of them, however they can be shywith strangers and find it difficult to socialise with other dogs.

The Greyhound is an intelligent dog and easy to train, but it is important to keep in mind that they are very sensitive dogs and can suffer from anxiety and stress if they do not receive enough attention and affection. Therefore, it is important to provide them with a stable and safe environment, and make sure they have enough quality time with their owner.
