Caring for a Bullmastiff

  • Maintenance: Brush once a week to remove excess moulted hair and bathe monthly to keep clean.
Grooming: Shorthaired breeds should not be clipped as they renew their coats. You can help by brushing the coat with a rubber mitt or brush to remove the excess hair and reduce shedding at home.
Special Attention: Pay extra attention to the pet's elbows as the skin there is prone to drying and cracking. Also keep an eye on any skin folds which can trap dirt and bacteria that can lead to irritation.
Recommended Grooming Appointments: A monthly bath is sufficient to help out with the shedding of this breed, make sure to use a moisturising shampoo to benefit both hair and skin.

Here are 3 easy steps to follow for the best results:

1. BRUSHING

  • Dogs like the short-coated Bullmastiff shed their fur twice a year.
  • A rubber brush used weekly is ideal for preventing excessive hair loss.
  • Long-toothed rakes help remove loose hair that is ready to fall out.
  • Undercoat rakes manage the undercoat without completely removing thermal protection.

What is the Bullmastiff like?

The Bullmastiff is a large, muscular breed of dog known for it's fiercely protective nature of it's home and family. Depsite their intimidation appearance, Bullmastiffs are very sweet and friendly dogs that enjoy human companionship and are ideal for home life.

These dogs have a sturdy, muscular body with a soft, dense coat that requires little maintenance. They are very protective dogs and need to be close to their owner and other animals to feel safe and happy.

It is important to note that due to their large frames they require the proper amount of space in a home to move and play. In addition, their protective nature requires good training from an early age to avoid potentially aggressive or dominant behaviour towards other people and animals.
