Shar Pei Care

  • Maintenance: The Shar Pei has short, harsh hair and very distinctive skin full of folds, which requires moderate maintenance focused especially on skin hygiene. Brushing once a week is recommended to remove dead hair. Bathing can be done every 4 to 6 weeks or when the dog is dirty.
  • Brushing and grooming: For its care, it is recommended to use a soft-bristle brush or a rubber grooming glove to help remove loose hair without irritating the skin. Brushing should be gentle, as its skin can be sensitive. It is also important to check and dry the folds thoroughly after brushing or bathing.
  • Hair trimming: The Shar Pei does not require hair trimming. Its coat stays naturally short, so maintenance focuses on removing dead hair through brushing and keeping the fold areas clean.
  • Special attention: It is essential to clean and dry the skin folds properly, especially on the head, neck, and base of the tail, to prevent moisture, irritation, or infections. It’s also advisable to check the ears, which are small and closed, as they can easily accumulate dirt.
  • Recommended grooming appointments: Bath every 4 to 6 weeks and grooming or maintenance sessions every 6 weeks for general hygiene, fold checks, ear cleaning, and nail trimming.

We show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.

1. BRUSHING AND GROOMING

  • The Shar Pei has a short, hard coat that feels rough to the touch. Although it doesn’t require intensive brushing, brushing once a week is recommended to remove dead hair and keep the coat clean.
  • It is recommended to use a rubber grooming glove or a soft-bristle brush that allows you to remove loose hair without damaging the skin.
  • Brushing also helps you check the condition of the skin, which is important in this breed due to its folds.
