Rhodesian Ridgeback Care
- Maintenance: requires weekly brushing and spaced baths, as its short coat is easy to maintain but it does shed. It is recommended to brush it once a week and bathe it every 4 to 8 weeks or when dirty.
- Brushing and grooming: it is recommended to use a rubber glove, a soft bristle brush or a gentle tool for short hair, always following the direction of the coat. It is best to use mild shampoos for short coats and normal or sensitive skin, avoiding very harsh products that may dry out the skin.
- Coat trimming: it does not require trimming as such, since its coat should remain natural. Only minimal hygienic trimming is done on nails, paw pads, the perianal area or small touch-ups if necessary for cleanliness and comfort.
- Special attention: it is important to monitor the dorsal ridge, the skin, any slight folds if present, the ears, nails and paw hygiene. It is also important to check for irritation, dryness, small abrasions or skin sensitivity, especially after frequent baths or intense sun exposure.
- Recommended grooming appointments: bathing every 4 to 8 weeks depending on need, and basic grooming or hygienic maintenance sessions every 6 to 8 weeks for general check-ups, bathing, nails, ears and shedding control.
¿Do you want the best care for your Rhodesian Ridgeback?
We show you the 3 steps you must follow to achieve it.
1. BRUSHING AND GROOMING
-
Brushing the Rhodesian Ridgeback is simple, but it should be done regularly to remove dead hair, dust and surface dirt.
-
It is ideal to use a rubber glove or a soft bristle brush that helps maintain the natural shine without irritating the skin.
-
It does not require complex grooming or detangling, but it does need a consistent pass over the entire body, including the ridge, to check the condition of the skin and coat.

¿What is the Rhodesian Ridgeback like?
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large, athletic and muscular dog, with a short, dense, smooth and shiny coat. Its most distinctive feature is the ridge along its back, a strip of hair that grows in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat.
It has skin that fits closely to the body and relatively simple maintenance, although it requires consistent care to maintain coat shine, control shedding and monitor the skin, especially in the ridge area.
