Lhasa Apso Care
- Maintenance: needs frequent brushing and regular baths to keep the coat clean, loose, and tangle-free. Typically, it’s brushed several times a week—daily if kept long-haired—and bathed every 2 to 4 weeks depending on coat length and lifestyle.
- Brushing and combing: it’s recommended to work in layers using a pin brush or a soft slicker, finishing with a metal comb to check that no tangles remain in the armpits, skirt, beard, legs, and behind the ears. It’s best to use gentle moisturizing shampoos for long coats and conditioners or detangling sprays that make brushing easier without weighing the coat down.
- Haircut: can be kept in a long show coat or with a more practical companion trim. In commercial grooming, a functional tidy-up is usually done with scissors or clippers to shorten the body, chest, belly, and legs, while keeping a rounded, clean expression on the head, ears, feet, and hygiene area.
- Special attention: pay close attention to the eyes, beard, tear stains, ears, armpits, groin, and paw pads, as these areas tend to collect moisture, dirt, and mats. It’s also advisable to check the condition of the skin under the coat and prevent the hair from becoming clumped after bathing or walks.
- Recommended grooming appointments: bath every 2 to 4 weeks and grooming every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on whether the coat is kept long or in a maintenance trim. For dogs in a full long coat, visits and at-home upkeep need to be more consistent.
Want the best care for your Lhasa Apso?
We’ll show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.
1. BRUSHING AND COMBING
- Brushing a Lhasa Apso should be done in sections, from roots to ends, to prevent hidden knots under the outer layer.
- It’s not enough to run the brush over the top: it’s important to part the coat and work deeply, especially in the armpits, behind the ears, chest, skirt, legs, and tail.
- The metal comb is used as a final check to make sure the hair is loose and fully detangled.

2. BATH
- Bathing should be regular to keep the coat clean and easy to manage.
- In this breed, a dirty coat tangles more easily, so it’s best to wash with a mild shampoo for long hair and follow with a conditioner or light mask to help with detangling.
- After the bath, it’s essential to dry completely while brushing to prevent clumping and tangles from the roots.

We can also apply the Artero Detox Vital, mask, which provides extra hydration and keeps the coat clean for longer.
3. HYGIENE
- Lhasa Apso hygiene should include frequent cleaning of the eyes and tear ducts, ear checks, nail trimming, and care of the hair between paw pads and the perianal area.
- The beard also needs regular attention because it easily retains moisture and debris.
-
Keeping these areas clean helps prevent irritation, bad odors, and localized tangles.

What is the Lhasa Apso like?
The Lhasa Apso is a small, compact, well-proportioned dog with an elegant and very distinctive look thanks to its long, abundant coat parted down the back. Its hair is heavy, straight, and hard to the touch, with a moderate undercoat, and should be neither woolly nor silky. This combination gives it a dense, protective appearance, designed to shield the body without restricting movement.
The head is heavily framed by hair, with abundant fall over the eyes and face, visible beard and mustache, which reinforces its noble, alert expression. Overall, it conveys solidity, balance, and a distinguished carriage despite its small size. When the coat is well maintained, the silhouette looks long, flowing, and natural, with legs and feet well covered in hair.
In terms of upkeep, it’s a demanding breed within dog grooming. The long coat tends to tangle easily in the armpits, groin, beard, ears, legs, and belly area if it isn’t brushed consistently. It can be kept in the traditional long coat or a more functional puppy-style trim, but in both cases it needs regular brushing, periodic bathing, and careful drying to prevent knots and clumping.
