Harrier Care

  • Grooming: needs weekly brushing and occasional baths, since its short coat requires little work, although it is advisable to remove loose hair and dirt regularly. The usual routine is to brush once a week and bathe only when dirty or every 4 to 8 weeks depending on its lifestyle.
  • Brushing and combing: it is recommended to use a rubber grooming mitt, a soft-bristle brush, or a hound mitt glove to remove dead hair and distribute the coat’s natural oils. It’s best to use mild shampoos for short coats and avoid heavy products that may dry out or dull the natural shine.
  • Haircut:  does not need a haircut as such, because the coat should be kept natural, short, and close to the body. Only minimal hygienic trimming is done on nails, paw pads, the perianal area, or small clean-up touch-ups if needed.
  • Special attention: it’s especially important to watch the ears, since as a drop-eared hound they can accumulate moisture and dirt, as well as to check nails, paw pads, and the overall condition of the skin. It’s also useful to monitor seasonal shedding and make sure there are no irritations after long walks or baths.
  • Recommended grooming appointments: a bath every 4 to 8 weeks as needed and basic grooming or hygienic maintenance sessions every 6 to 8 weeks to check nails, ears, paw pads, and manage dead hair.

Want the best care for your Harrier?

We’ll show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.

1. BRUSHING AND COMBING

  • The Harrier is easy to brush, but benefits from a weekly routine to remove dead hair, dust, and surface dirt.
  • Ideally, use a rubber grooming mitt, hound glove, or soft-bristle brush, always brushing in the direction of the hair to maintain shine and avoid irritating the skin.
  • It doesn’t need complex detangling or specific styling, but it does benefit from consistent brushing of the tail, neck, and sides during shedding seasons.

2. BATH

  • Bathing should be moderate, only when it’s truly dirty or starts to smell, so as not to overly remove the coat’s natural protection.
  • It is recommended to use a mild dog shampoo and rinse very thoroughly, then dry especially the ears, groin, and belly area.
  • For this breed, the goal is cleanliness, healthy skin, and the natural shine of the short coat.

  • It’s also advisable to maintain a dental hygiene routine and check the skin after trips to the countryside or long walks, because it’s an active breed that can pick up dirt easily.

What is the Harrier like?

The Harrier is a medium-sized dog with a strong, well-proportioned, highly functional build, bred to follow trails over long days. It has an athletic body, compact yet elegant, with a well-developed chest, firm back, and solid limbs that allow it to move with stamina and agility. Its overall appearance conveys energy, balance, and working ability, without looking heavy or coarse.

The head is moderately broad, with a lively and friendly expression, a defined muzzle, and medium-length drop ears that frame the face nicely. The eyes typically show an alert, intelligent gaze, very attentive to the surroundings. It is a breed with a noble, active look, typical of hounds, always ready to move.

Its coat is short, smooth, dense, and resilient, lying close to the body, which makes daily maintenance quite easy. It has no feathering or volume, and the finish should look clean, natural, and shiny. Although at first glance it seems like a low-maintenance breed aesthetically, it does need regular care to remove dead hair, keep the skin healthy, and maintain an overall good appearance.

In terms of temperament, it is usually a sociable, lively, very dynamic dog. It is active by nature, curious, and has a strong scenting instinct, so it enjoys exercise, long walks, and outdoor activities. Its body language is often cheerful and confident, reinforcing that image of a hardy, working dog that’s always on the go.
