Caring for your Dachshund
- Maintenance: Brush once a week to remove excess moulted hair and bathe monthly to keep clean.
Grooming: Shorthaired breeds should not be clipped as they renew their coats. You can help by brushing the coat with a rubber mitt or brush to remove the excess hair and reduce shedding at home.
Special Attention: Pay extra attention to the pet's elbows as the skin there is prone to drying and cracking. Also keep an eye on any skin folds which can trap dirt and bacteria that can lead to irritation.
Recommended Grooming Appointments: A monthly bath is sufficient to help out with the shedding of this breed, make sure to use a moisturising shampoo to benefit both hair and skin.
Do you want the best care for your Dachshund?
Here are 3 easy steps for you to follow for the best results:
1. BRUSHING
- With their short coats, Dachshunds undergo two major moults during Spring and Autumn.
- If you brush this coat weekly with a rubber brush you will reduce the amount of hair shed at home.
- During the heavier shedding seasons, pin rakes can be more useful to remove any trapped hair in the coat.
- De-Shedders can help control excess undercoat, but be mindful that there should be enough undercoat left to protect the pet from the cold and heat.

What is the Dachsund like?
The Dachshund is a German breed of dog that originated in the Middle Ages to hunt rabbits. They are known to be courageous and inquisitive dogs, and have a highly developed hunting instinct. They are small and compact in size, with a short coat that is soft to the touch. Despite their size, they are very active and energetic dogs, and require a good deal of exercise and physical activity to keep them healthy and happy. They are very affectionate and loyal to their family, and adapt well to life in a flat or small house. However, due to their hunting instinct, they can be a little stubborn and need firm and constant training. Overall, the Shorthaired Dachshund is an ideal dog for active and affectionate families looking for a loyal and fun companion.
