Caring for a Chow Chow
- Maintenance: Brushing once a week along with a monthly bath is most recommended.
Brushing: Brushing weekly is recommended to minimise shedding at home, you should always use products and tools that won't damage the coat or skin of your Chow Chow.
Grooming: This is a breed who's coat renews itself seasonally which causes shedding of old/dead hair therefore you cannot clip this type of coat but rather stimulate it with brushing and shape it with light scissoring.
Special Attention: Pay attention to protect the nose and paw pads from dryness to prevent cracked skin which can lead to wounds.
Professional Grooming: This breed should be groomed professionally every 8 to 12 weeks depending on the volume of shedding, meaning visits should be more frequent around Spring and Autumn when the biggest coat change happens. Alongside this, the Chow Chow should be bathed monthly to maintain healthy skin and coat.

Here are 3 easy steps to follow for the best results:

- The Chow Chow has a double coat and sheds heavily twice a year.
- It is advised to brush them weekly with a long-pin slicker and follow after with a comb to avoid tangles and minimise the shedding at home.
- Using a conditioner spray will make brushing easier as it prevents hair pulling which reduces breakage and adds shine to the coat.
- De-shedders and rakes with blades can help control the excess undercoat that can leave enough to protect the Chow Chow from the heat and cold.

What is the Chow Chow like?
The Chow Chow is a dog breed of Chinese origin known for it's distinct appearance, which includes a dense but soft coat, a round found and curled tail. This dog is protective of it's family and can be reserved to strangers, so it is important to socialise them from a young age to overcome this barrier and help them develop proper social skills.
In addition to their protective nature, Chow Chows are quite independent dogs often preferring to spend time alone or with select family members rather than with other animals. However this breed is very active and needs plenty of daily exercise to keep happy.
The dense coat requires a lot of thorough grooming to prevent knotting to happen, this can be uncomfortable for the dog and cause itchiness. Keeping regular vet visits is also important to prevent issues with their skin and eyes from occuring.
Overall this breed is a perfect companion for those who are looking for a protective but self-sufficient companion, but someone who is also willing to commit to the training and care needed for this dog.
