Border Terrier Care
- Maintenance: needs weekly brushing and, during shedding periods or when the coat “opens up,” it’s advisable to increase the frequency to remove dead hair and loose undercoat. Bathing shouldn’t be excessive so as not to soften or alter the harsh topcoat; every 6 to 10 weeks usually works well, or sooner only if it gets truly dirty.
- Brushing and combing: it’s best done with a soft or medium slicker brush, a metal comb and, when appropriate, a stripping knife or stone to remove mature hair without breaking the texture. The goal isn’t to create fluffy volume, but to keep the coat harsh, clean and well-aired, going over the beard, neck, shoulders, light furnishings and legs thoroughly.
- Hair trimming: the usual grooming isn’t a short clipper cut, but hand stripping or manual trimming to preserve the harsh outer coat and the natural outline. Work is typically focused on the neck, withers, back, sides, croup and tail, keeping the head neat but natural, and tidying feet and outlines discreetly.
- Special attention: keep an eye on the beard and facial area, armpits, groin, legs and feet, where dirt can build up or the undercoat can mat. It’s also advisable to check ears, nails and skin if you bathe too often or use products that soften the coat, as that harms its protective texture.
- Recommended grooming appointments: bath about every 6 to 10 weeks and grooming every 8 to 12 weeks for coat maintenance; if you want to better preserve the breed’s typical texture, you can do rolling coat or more frequent maintenance stripping in short sessions.
Want the best care for your Border Terrier?
We’ll show you the 3 steps you need to follow to achieve it.
1. BRUSHING AND COMBING
- The Border Terrier doesn’t need ornamental styling, but it does need regular work to remove dead hair and keep the harsh coat in good condition.
- The most useful approach is to combine weekly brushing with a metal comb and more thorough checks during shedding seasons.
- On typical breed coats, stripping helps preserve the rough texture and the hair’s natural protection; trimming too much or overusing clippers can soften it and change its function.

2. BATHING
-
Bathing should be moderate. For this breed it’s usually better to space it out and use mild shampoos that clean without softening the coat or stripping too much of its natural oils.
-
When bathed too often, the hair can lose harshness and the skin can be affected more easily. - Drying thoroughly, without leaving moisture in the undercoat, helps keep the skin healthy and the coat functional.

What is the Border Terrier like?
The Border Terrier is a small, active, hardy and highly functional dog, bred for field work and adapted to outdoor life. Its overall look is rustic and natural, without excessive volume or artificial finishes, which is directly reflected in its coat.
It has a harsh, rough, tight outer coat designed to protect it from dirt, moisture and harsh weather, while the undercoat is dense and close, providing insulation and helping keep the skin protected. This combination means it’s not a long-coated breed or one for ornamental grooming, but a dog whose coat should retain its practical, protective texture.
In grooming, the Border Terrier isn’t handled like a decorative cut breed or one with a rounded finish. The most important thing is to respect its natural structure and maintain coat quality, avoiding techniques or routines that soften it, thin it too much or alter its function.
Its upkeep is usually considered moderate: it doesn’t require intensive daily care, but it does require consistency to remove dead hair, aerate the undercoat and prevent the coat from matting or losing harshness. When cared for properly, the hair keeps that rough, compact finish that’s so characteristic of the breed, while also offering very effective protection against the environment.
