Caring for a Bernese
- Maintenance: Brushing once a week along with a monthly bath is most recommended.
Grooming: Brushing weekly is recommended to minimise shedding at home, you should always use products and tools that won't damage the coat or skin of your Bernese Mountain Dog. This is a breed who's coat renews itself seasonally which causes shedding of old/dead hair therefore you cannot clip this type of coat but rather stimulate it's growth with brushing and shape it with light scissoring.
Special Attention: Pay attention to protect the nose and paw pads from dryness to prevent cracked skin which can lead to wounds.
Recommended Grooming Appointments: This breed should be groomed professionally every 8 to 12 weeks depending on the volume of shedding, meaning visits should be more frequent around Spring and Autumn when the biggest coat change happens. Alongside this, they should be bathed monthly to maintain healthy skin and coat.

- It is advised to brush them weekly with a long-pin slicker and follow after with a comb to avoid tangles and minimise the shedding at home.
- Using a conditioner spray will make brushing easier as it prevents hair pulling which reduces breakage and adds shine to the coat.
- De-shedders and rakes with blades can help control the excess undercoat that can leave enough to protect the Bernese from the heat and cold.

What is the Bernese Mountain Dog lik?
This is originally a Swiss breed, known for it's thick coat and distinct colour markings. They are strong, muscular dogs with a sweet and friendly personality.
Despite their size this is a very active breed and need a great deal of exercise to keep happy. They love outdoor activities like running and hiking.
Their long dense coat requires regular maintenance, due to their shedding cycle some dead coat can become trapped under the top coat which can cause itching and bad smells. To avoid this brush and bathe the dog regularly so you are always aware of any changes or developments in the coat.
Overall, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a friendly and loyal companion, however it is important to be committed to training this breed as they are intelligent and willing to learn but may run wild if left without direction.
