Caring for a Beagle

  • Maintenance: Brush once a week to remove excess moulted hair and bathe monthly to keep clean.
  • Grooming: Shorthaired breeds should not be clipped as they renew their coats. You can help by brushing the coat with a rubber mitt or brush to remove the excess hair and reduce shedding at home.
  • Special Attention: Pay extra attention to the pet's elbows as the skin there is prone to drying and cracking. Also keep an eye on any skin folds which can trap dirt and bacteria that can lead to irritation.
  • Recommended Grooming Appointments: A monthly bath is sufficient to help out with the shedding of this breed, make sure to use a moisturising shampoo to benefit both hair and skin.

Here are 3 easy steps to follow for the best results:

1. BRUSHING

  • The Beagle with short fur experiences significant seasonal shedding.
  • Brushing with a rubber brush once a week helps reduce hair loss.
  • During shedding, rakes are ideal for removing hair that has completed its life cycle and is about to detach from the skin tissue.
  • Undercoat rakes can be useful for managing the undercoat, maintaining adequate protection.

What is the Beagle like?

Beagles are an English breed originally, known for their small size and friendly, playful personality. These dogs are known as loyal and affectionate to their owners and especially children.

Beagles are very active dogs and equire a great deal of daily exercise to keep them healthy and happy. They are ideal for outdoor activities such as walking, running and playing however, they are also curious so it is important to keep them either in a secure area when exercising or on a leash when in the outdoors.

When it comes to training, Beagles are intelligent and easy to train, but can be stubborn about following their nose constantly. Keep patient and consistent to yield results.

Overall, Beagles are an excellent family dog who can adapt to most home environments and children. It is important for new and potential owners to be aware that they will need to invest time and responsibility into training this breed to be able to use up its energy effectively.
