Caring for an American Staffordshire
- Maintenance: Brush once a week to remove excess moulted hair and bathe monthly to keep clean.
- Grooming: Shorthaired breeds should not be clipped as they renew their coats. You can help by brushing the coat with a rubber mitt or brush to remove the excess hair and reduce shedding at home.
- Special Attention: Pay extra attention to the pet's elbows as the skin there is prone to drying and cracking.
- Grooming Regularity: A monthly bath is sufficient to help out with the shedding of this breed, make sure to use a moisturising shampoo to benefit both hair and skin.

- If you brush this coat weekly with a rubber brush you will reduce the amount of hair shed at home.
- During the heavier shedding seasons, pin rakes can be more useful to remove any trapped hair in the coat.

What is the American Staffordshire like?
The American Staffordshire Terrier, also known as an Amstaff or Staffie, is originally an American breed known for it's loyalty and friendly personality.
The Amstaff is generally a very intelligent dog that is willing to learn and be trained but requires firm leadership and early socialisation with other dogs to prevent behavioural problems. They are very protective of their family and love to spend time with them.
Despite their imposing and muscular appearance, they are known to be sweet and loving dogs, especially to children. However, due to their protective nature it is important to teach them the difference between friend and foe early.
Overall, the American Staffordshire Terrier is an excellent choice for those wanting a loyal and protective but very loving companion for their family. However, all potential owners need to know that this breed requires a committed and responsible owner who can handle training and invest time in proper socialisation for the dog.
