Caring for an Afghan Hound

  • Maintenance: it is recommended to brush this coat daily to avoid knotting, but it should be brushed a minimum of 3 times a week with a bath every 15 days.
  • Haircut: Stripping is used on the back, tail, face and throat. Some commercial pet groomers will use either clippers or shears to complete these parts instead. There should be considerable length on the legs, head, back of tail and skirt.
  • Special Attention: It is important to keep ontop of the hygiene of the eyes and ears to avoid infections. This coat can have the tendency to knot when kept longer so always check the coat through with a comb after brushing to catch any knots that may remain.
  • Professional Grooming: This coat, especially if kept longer, should be professionally groomed every 8 weeks with a bath in between for maintenance. Regular grooming visits ensure the coat is kept in it's ideal state.

Do you want to better understand the care of an Afghan Hound?

Here are 3 easy steps to follow for the best results:

1. BRUSHING

  • Afghan Hounds have long lucious hair that requires specific care to maintain the length and condition.
  • It is recommended to brush through the coat a few times a week to ensure it is free from tangles, whenever you use a brush you should always follow after with a comb to make sure you didn't miss any tangles.
  • To make brushing easier and further protect the hair it is best to use a conditioner in a spray form. This will not only provide shine and hydration to the coat but also prevent breakage during brushing.
  • If you find any knots or tangles you will need to use a conditioning spray and specific brush to avoid damaging the coat or causing discomfort to the dog.

  • Always use a conditioner at the end of the bathing process to avoid having dry and brittle hair which can cause tangles and breakage in the future.
  • If you do not have access to a bathtub then use a no-rinse alternative such as dry shampoo.

  • If the coat of the Afghan is darker in colour and it is exposed to the sun frequently you should take steps to protect the coat from fading in colour.
  • The hairless nose and pads require special attention to prevent the skin from cracking and creating wounds.
